A review of the 1971 JLC Memevox “EGG”. A deep dive into the functionally & practicality of the retro styled time piece.

The Introductuon:

As I got ready to leave for the morning, I found myself at a standoff. While we had recently acquired this new Memevox, I was a stickler for my daily Seamster. Time began to move forward more than I had anticipated, and eventually, I just had to grab the Memevox. The Memovox sat comfortably on my wrist throughout the ride, and it unusual apprreance caught the eye’s of a few strangers on walk into work.

The Presence:

As I Began to carry on my daily activities, I would get excited to check the time. With its elegant and timeless design, immediately drew me in. The watch’s stainless steel case, coupled with its slightly domed acrylic crystal, exuded a vintage charm that modern watches often lack. The dial, a rich shade of blue featured a combination of triangular markers and Arabic numerals that seemed to capture the essence of the early ’70s. But what truly set this watch apart was its alarm function, a feature that was quite advanced for its time. One of the most fascinating aspects of the Memovox was its alarm mechanism. Setting the alarm involved rotating the crown at 2 o’clock, which moved an inner disc on the dial to the desired time. When the alarm went off, it emitted a charmingly mechanical buzz, a far cry from the digital alarms we are accustomed to today. This feature wasn’t just functional; it was a delightful nod to the ingenuity of watchmakers from a bygone era.As I went about my day, the Memovox remained a faithful companion. Its mechanical movement kept impeccable time, a testament to the durability and precision of its design. Each tick of the watch was a subtle reminder of the intricate gears and springs working in harmony beneath the dial. It was a mechanical symphony that connected me to the watch in a way that no modern quartz or digital watch could.

The watch attracted attention and admiration from those around me. Fellow watch enthusiasts recognized it immediately, often sparking conversations about its history and the craftsmanship behind it. Even those less familiar with vintage timepieces couldn’t help but appreciate its aesthetic appeal and the story it carried.Reflecting on my time with the Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox, I realized that it was more than just a watch. It was a piece of history, a tangible link to an era when mechanical ingenuity was at its peak. Wearing it was a unique experience, one that allowed me to appreciate the artistry and dedication that went into creating such a remarkable timepiece.
