Rolex Explorer 6150 Description

The Rolex Explorer ref. 6150 was produced from 1952 to 1959 and is widely considered one of the earliest true Explorer models. It was the first reference to feature the now-iconic 3-6-9 dial configuration paired with Mercedes hands, establishing the visual template for the Explorer line. The 6150 housed a 36 mm stainless steel Oyster case with a domed acrylic crystal and smooth bezel, and it was powered by the Rolex Caliber A296 or the upgraded Rolex Caliber 1030 in later examples. The case thickness was approximately 13 mm, with a 44 mm lug-to-lug span and a 20 mm lug width. Dials were typically gilt with radium luminous paint, and early versions often lacked the ‘Explorer’ label while maintaining the signature layout. The 6150 was worn by members of the 1953 Everest expedition and is viewed by collectors as the first watch to formally embody the Explorer identity. Its rarity, especially in early unsigned dial configurations, along with its critical role in shaping Rolex’s identity as a tool watch manufacturer, make it one of the most historically important vintage Rolex references.
