Rolex Explorer 8045 Description

The Rolex Explorer ref. 8045 is an extremely rare and scarcely documented model, believed to have been produced in the early 1950s, likely around 1952–1953. Like the closely related ref. 8044, the 8045 falls into the category of pre-Explorer models developed during Rolex’s push to test rugged Oyster Perpetual watches in harsh conditions. It featured a 36 mm stainless steel Oyster case with a smooth bezel and domed acrylic crystal, and was powered by the Rolex Caliber A296 automatic movement. The case measured approximately 13 mm thick, with a 44 mm lug-to-lug distance and a 20 mm lug width. Dial configurations varied but were known to feature gilt printing, radium lume, and occasionally early 3-6-9 numeral layouts, though most examples were unsigned or lacked consistent branding. The 8045 is regarded by collectors as a transitional reference—likely produced in very limited quantities and possibly never officially cataloged. Its historical significance lies in its role as part of the field-testing group that led to the development of the Explorer line, linking Rolex’s early experimentation with what would become one of its most iconic tool watches.
