Rolex Oyster Perpetual 6285 Description
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual ref. 6285 is a refined and less commonly seen reference from the early to mid-1950s. This model featured a 34mm case, often crafted in stainless steel or 18k gold, and was typically fitted with a smooth or fluted bezel. The design embraced the aesthetic codes of the era, with a domed acrylic crystal, screw-down crown, and the early waterproof Oyster case construction that made Rolex famous. The 6285 was powered by the Rolex Caliber 645, a bi-directional self-winding movement offering a power reserve of about 42 hours and known for its accuracy and reliability. Dial variants included silver, cream, or black tones with applied baton, dagger, or Arabic markers, and dauphine or leaf hands, often lumed with radium for nighttime visibility. The lug-to-lug measurement is approximately 42mm, and the lug width is 19mm, contributing to its balanced wrist presence. Although not as widely recognized as other Oyster Perpetual references, the 6285 is valued by vintage collectors for its distinctive mid-century charm and historical importance in Rolex’s progression toward modern automatic wristwatches.
