History & Infomation On The Brand
Zodiac, founded in 1882 by Ariste Calame in Le Locle, Switzerland, began as a family-run watchmaking business with a focus on creating high-quality, reliable timepieces. Early on, Zodiac established a reputation for precision and innovation, but it wasnโt until the mid-20th century that the brand became renowned for its groundbreaking designs in the realm of dive watches. Zodiac was among the first watchmakers to enter the dive watch market, releasing the iconic Sea Wolf in 1953, the same year as the Rolex Submariner and Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. The Sea Wolf quickly gained popularity among military and recreational divers for its robust construction, water resistance, and affordability, setting a new standard for dive watches.
In the 1960s, Zodiac continued to push boundaries with the introduction of the Super Sea Wolf, which offered even greater depth resistance and durability. This model became a staple among adventurers and divers, gaining a cult following that persists to this day. Zodiacโs emphasis on bold design also extended beyond functionality, with vibrant colors, unique bezel shapes, and standout dial designs, helping the brand stand out during the eraโs dive watch boom.
Today, Zodiac is celebrated among collectors and enthusiasts for its heritage-inspired reissues, especially of the Sea Wolf series, which stay true to the brandโs adventurous spirit and innovative origins. Known for combining vintage appeal with modern specifications, Zodiac remains a beloved name in the world of tool watches, appealing to those who appreciate authentic dive heritage and iconic designs that have shaped watchmaking history.
