Movement

The engine of a watch, responsible for driving its timekeeping and complications. Movements can be classified into three main types:

  • Mechanical Movement: Powered by a mainspring, which is manually wound or automatically wound via a rotor. It operates through a series of gears and an escapement, offering traditional craftsmanship and smooth, sweeping motion of the second hand.
  • Quartz Movement: Powered by a battery, regulated by a quartz crystal oscillating at a precise frequency. Known for its remarkable accuracy, low maintenance, and affordability.
  • Hybrid/Electronic Movement: A combination of mechanical and electronic elements, such as spring-drive or solar-powered movements, that blend tradition with modern technology.

Movements are often referred to as the “caliber,” especially when distinguished by unique design or features specific to a brand. The movement not only determines the watch’s functionality but also reflects its craftsmanship and technological sophistication.
