Rolex Explorer 5506 Description
The Rolex Explorer ref. 5506 was produced during the mid-1950s, with known examples dating from approximately 1954 to 1959. This reference is considered a rare and transitional Explorer variant, often found with 3-6-9 dials but sometimes lacking the ‘Explorer’ text, reflecting Rolex’s experimentation during the early years of the line. It featured a 34 mm Oyster case crafted in stainless steel or two-tone steel and gold configurations, paired with a smooth bezel and a domed acrylic crystal. The watch was powered by the Rolex Caliber A296 automatic movement, a bubbleback-derived mechanism known for robustness and simplicity. The case measured about 13 mm thick, with a 42 mm lug-to-lug distance and a 19 mm lug width. Dial configurations varied widely, ranging from gilt Explorer-style layouts with radium lume to more conventional baton marker designs. As with other early Explorers, many examples of the 5506 were likely produced for specific markets and were not broadly advertised, making them quite rare today. Collectors value this reference for its blend of early Rolex sport watch characteristics and low production numbers.
