Rolex Oyster Perpetual 1036 Description

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual ref. 1036 is a mid-century model produced during the early 1950s, reflecting Rolex’s post-war design language and technical refinements. This reference featured a 34mm stainless steel case with a smooth bezel, exhibiting the utilitarian elegance that became a hallmark of the Oyster Perpetual line. It utilized Rolex’s screw-down crown and screw-down caseback system, housed beneath an acrylic crystal, ensuring a high level of water resistance for the period. Powered by the Rolex Caliber 645 automatic movement, the 1036 offered dependable performance with a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. The dial typically included applied baton indices, dauphine or alpha hands with luminous inserts, and a central seconds hand, often set against a silver or champagne background with a clean, symmetrical layout. The watch measured approximately 41mm lug-to-lug with a 19mm lug width, lending it a balanced wrist presence suitable for everyday wear. Though not as commonly encountered as later Oyster Perpetual models, the 1036 is valued for its understated design, reliable mechanics, and transitional aesthetic bridging the rugged 1940s Rolex tool watches and the refined offerings of the 1950s. It remains a strong option for collectors seeking an early automatic Rolex with vintage charm and wearable proportions.
