Rolex Oyster Perpetual 3135 Description
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual reference 3135 is an exceptionally rare “Bubbleback” model from the pre-war era, with known examples dated to circa 1939. This reference is historically significant as it represents one of the earliest self-winding, waterproof chronometers produced by Rolex. Its larger case size for the period and unique lug design mark it as a distinct and important evolution in the “Oyster Perpetual” lineage. The “Bubbleback” name, given by collectors, refers to the domed case back required to house the early automatic winding rotor. The reference 3135 is most notably found in 18k yellow gold, indicating it was a luxurious, top-of-the-line model. A defining feature is its elegant hooded “shell” lugs, which give the watch a very distinct and sophisticated profile. The dial was typically cream or silvered, with applied gold markers complementing the gold case. Its rarity, early production date, precious metal construction, and unique design features make the reference 3135 an extremely sought-after “grail” watch for serious collectors of vintage Rolex.
