Rolex Oyster Perpetual 5002 Description

The Rolex 5002 is a very rare and historically important reference from the late 1940s known to collectors as a “Big Bubbleback” or “Ovettone” (Italian for “big egg”). This model marks a significant step in the evolution of the Oyster Perpetual, transitioning from the smaller 32mm Bubblebacks to a more substantial and modern 36mm case size. This larger case, powered by the A295 automatic caliber, paved the way for the iconic Rolex Datejust. The reference 5002 was produced in stainless steel and is most famous for its exceptionally rare and desirable dial variant, known as the “Stelline” or “Star Dial,” which features applied star-shaped hour markers. Watches with these dials are among the most coveted and valuable of all vintage Oyster Perpetuals. The combination of its larger size and the potential for a rare dial configuration makes the 5002 a true “grail” watch for many serious Rolex collectors.
