Rolex Oyster Perpetual 5045 Description

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual reference 5045 is an extremely rare “Bubble Back” model from the late 1940s, celebrated for its highly unusual and stylish case design. Produced around 1948, the watch’s historical significance lies in its “hooded lug” or “shrouded lug” construction, a feature sometimes nicknamed the “Monk’s Hood” by collectors. This design integrates a cover that flows over the ends of the lugs, creating a seamless and streamlined profile. The known examples are executed in a two-tone combination of a stainless steel case with an 18k pink gold bezel and screw-down crown. This mix of materials, combined with the rare hooded lugs, makes the 5045 a distinct and highly coveted piece. The watch is powered by a Rolex 9 3/4”’ automatic movement and represents a pinnacle of Rolex’s post-war design experimentation.
