Rolex Oysterquartz Datejust 17000

The Rolex Oysterquartz Datejust ref. 17000 was introduced in 1977 and produced until approximately 2001. It was the foundational model in the Oysterquartz line, representing Rolex’s response to the quartz revolution of the 1970s. The watch featured a 36 mm stainless steel case with sharp, angular lines and an integrated Oyster bracelet, clearly influenced by the design trends of the era. It was powered by the in-house Rolex Caliber 5035 quartz movement, a highly engineered and thermocompensated quartz caliber with analog display and date function. The case thickness measured approximately 12.5 mm, with a lug-to-lug distance of 44 mm and a lug width of 19 mm. The 17000 was fitted with a smooth bezel and came with a variety of dial colors, including silver, blue, black, and champagne, with baton hour markers and applied Rolex coronets. Notably, the movement was COSC-certified and used a stepper motor for the seconds hand, giving it a distinct tick unlike the smooth sweep of mechanical Rolex models. Though quartz watches were polarizing, the 17000 has since gained a cult following for its bold design, technological significance, and relative rarity. Today, it is appreciated as one of Rolex’s most unique and innovative departures from tradition.
