Rolex Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA 116660 Description
The Rolex Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA ref. 116660 was introduced in 2008 as a major evolution in Rolex’s professional dive watch line, designed for extreme underwater exploration. This model marked the debut of the DEEPSEA designation, boasting a staggering 3,900-meter (12,800 feet) water resistance thanks to its innovative Ringlock System—a multi-part case architecture composed of a nitrogen-alloyed stainless steel ring, a titanium caseback, and a 5.5mm domed sapphire crystal. The case measures 44mm in diameter, with a lug-to-lug length of approximately 52mm and a lug width of 21mm, giving it substantial wrist presence. It is powered by the Rolex Caliber 3135, a COSC-certified automatic movement known for its robustness and 48-hour power reserve. The 116660 includes a unidirectional Cerachrom bezel with platinum-coated numerals, a helium escape valve, and Rolex’s Glidelock clasp extension system for over-suit wear. Dial options include the standard black dial and, starting in 2014, the special D-Blue dial commemorating James Cameron’s Mariana Trench expedition, transitioning from deep blue to black with a green DEEPSEA signature. This reference was the most technically advanced Rolex diver at its launch and continues to be a symbol of Rolex’s engineering prowess. Discontinued in 2018, it was replaced by the updated ref. 126660. The 116660 remains a popular model among enthusiasts for its bold proportions, tool-watch aesthetic, and connection to extreme exploration history.
