Rolex Chronograph 3525 Description

The Rolex Chronograph reference 3525 holds a significant place in the brand’s history, both for its innovative design and its compelling backstory. Produced from 1939 to the late 1940s, it was one of the first chronographs housed in an Oyster case, featuring a patented “Monoblocco” construction where the case middle and bezel are milled from a single piece of metal, enhancing water resistance. This robust design made it a favorite among military personnel. Its historical significance is famously cemented by its association with Allied Prisoners of War during WWII; Rolex supplied these watches to POWs in camps like Stalag Luft III, famously depicted in “The Great Escape,” on a buy-now, pay-later basis, symbolizing hope and defiance. The 3525 was offered in stainless steel, steel and gold, 18k yellow gold, and 18k pink gold. It featured a variety of dial designs, including different scales (tachymeter, telemeter, pulsometer) and occasionally retailer signatures like “Bucherer’s”. Powering the watch is the reliable manually wound Rolex Caliber 13”’ (based on the Valjoux 23). Its blend of technical innovation, wartime provenance, and classic design makes the 3525 a highly collectible and storied timepiece.
