Rolex Day-Date President 1807 Description
The Rolex Day-Date reference 1807 is a distinct and stylistic variation of the iconic 180x series, produced from the early 1960s through the late 1970s. This reference is uniquely identified by its artisanal “bark” finish, a finely engraved texture applied to the bezel and often to the center links of the President bracelet. This decorative touch set it apart from the more traditional fluted (1803) and smooth (1802) bezels. The historical context of the 1807 is that of a more expressive and fashionable era, particularly the 1970s, where textured gold jewelry was in vogue. Its significance lies in its demonstration of Rolex’s decorative craftsmanship, offering a Day-Date that was not only a symbol of status but also a piece of wearable art. The bark finish provided a unique play of light and a tactile quality that was both visually interesting and sophisticated. Variations of the reference 1807 primarily concern the extent of the bark treatment—some examples feature it on the bezel only, while the most complete versions have matching bracelet center links. The watch was offered in 18k yellow and white gold and, like its counterparts, was available with the full range of “pie-pan” dials that characterized the era. Mechanically, the 1807 is identical to other Day-Dates of the period. It was initially equipped with the Rolex Caliber 1555, which was later updated around 1965 to the higher-frequency Caliber 1556. A hacking seconds feature was incorporated in 1972 for more precise time-setting. All other specifications, such as the 36mm Oyster case, acrylic crystal, and non-quickset day and date complication, are consistent with the 180x family. The 1807 remains a sought-after reference for collectors who appreciate its unique, vintage aesthetic and artistic flair.
