Rolex Explorer II 16570 Description
The Rolex Explorer II ref. 16570 was produced from 1989 to 2011 and represents the longest-running model in the Explorer II line. It maintained the 40 mm stainless steel Oyster case and fixed 24-hour bezel design of its predecessor but introduced a more modern aesthetic and upgraded functionality. Initially powered by the Rolex Caliber 3185 and later by the refined Caliber 3186 (from approximately 2006 onward), the 16570 featured an independently adjustable GMT hand and a 50-hour power reserve. The case was approximately 12.5 mm thick with a lug-to-lug span of 47.5 mm and a lug width of 20 mm. Buyers could choose between black or white (Polar) dials, both with luminous markers and Mercedes hands, offering strong legibility in all lighting conditions. Dial variations across its 22-year production span include tritium (1989–1998), Luminova (1998–2000), and Super-LumiNova (2000–2011), along with several font and alignment differences on both dial and bezel. Thanks to its durability, practical GMT complication, and understated tool-watch design, the 16570 has become a favorite among collectors and enthusiasts seeking value and heritage in a modern Rolex sports watch.
