Rolex Explorer 1016 Description

The Rolex Explorer ref. 1016 was produced from 1960 to 1989 and stands as one of the most iconic tool watches in Rolex history. It succeeded the short-lived ref. 6610 and quickly established itself as the definitive Explorer model through nearly three decades of continuous production. The watch featured a 36 mm stainless steel Oyster case, known for its durability and wearability, paired with an acrylic crystal and screw-down crown. Initially powered by the Rolex Caliber 1560 and later updated to the Rolex Caliber 1570 around 1965, the movement offered a hacking seconds feature and a 48-hour power reserve in later versions. The case was approximately 12 mm thick with a 44 mm lug-to-lug measurement and a lug width of 20 mm. Its dial design is among the most recognizable in horology, characterized by the matte black finish, luminous 3-6-9 Arabic numerals, triangle at 12 o’clock, and Mercedes hands. Over its long production run, subtle changes occurred including variations in lume material (radium to tritium), font thickness, chapter rings, and dial printing. The 1016’s long service life, simplicity, and ties to Rolex’s mountaineering heritage—particularly the Everest legacy—make it a pillar of the brand’s legacy and a perennial favorite among vintage collectors.
