History & Infomation On The Brand
Certina, founded in 1888 by brothers Adolf and Alfred Kurth in Grenchen, Switzerland, began as a small family-owned watch workshop. Originally known as “Kurth Frรจres,” the brand rebranded as Certina in 1939, drawing from the Latin word *certus*, meaning “reliable,” to underscore its commitment to durability and precision. By the mid-20th century, Certina had earned a reputation for producing robust, high-quality timepieces, particularly with its development of the DS (Double Security) concept in 1959. This innovation, which combined a reinforced case construction with enhanced shock and water resistance, made Certina a leader in sports watches and set a new industry standard for durability.
The DS line proved its resilience through a series of extreme tests, including Himalayan expeditions and underwater ventures, establishing Certina as a trusted choice for adventurers and professionals. The brand’s dedication to precision and reliability made it popular with divers, mountaineers, and outdoor enthusiasts alike. In 1960, the Certina DS accompanied the successful Dhaulagiri expedition in the Himalayas, further cementing its reputation for reliability under harsh conditions.
Today, Certina continues to be celebrated for its sturdy designs and technical reliability, with a strong focus on sports and adventure watches. Known for models like the DS Action Diver and DS Powermatic 80, Certina remains a beloved brand for those who value Swiss quality and rugged endurance in a timepiece.
