History & Infomation On The Brand
Rolex, founded in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis in London, initially focused on producing high-quality wristwatches at a time when pocket watches were still dominant. Wilsdorf had a vision for reliable, precise wristwatches, and he sourced movements from Switzerland to ensure top-notch quality. In 1919, Rolex relocated to Geneva, Switzerland, a strategic move that solidified its commitment to excellence in Swiss watchmaking. Over the years, Rolex pioneered many innovations that have become industry standards, helping to define modern luxury sports watches.
One of Rolexโs most significant milestones was in 1926 with the creation of the Oyster, the worldโs first waterproof wristwatch. This innovation was famously tested when Mercedes Gleitze, a British swimmer, wore the Oyster on a cross-Channel swim, proving its durability and reliability under extreme conditions. In 1931, Rolex introduced the Perpetual, the first self-winding mechanism, which revolutionized wristwatch functionality. Later, models like the Submariner (1953), Explorer (1953), GMT-Master (1955), and Daytona (1963) became iconic for their ruggedness, functionality, and association with adventurers, divers, and explorers around the world.
Rolex continues to be a benchmark in luxury watchmaking, with models like the Datejust, Day-Date, and Yacht-Master remaining among the most coveted. Known for its timeless designs, exceptional durability, and precise movements, Rolex embodies prestige and performance. The brandโs legacy of innovation, combined with meticulous craftsmanship, has established Rolex as one of the most recognized and respected names in horology, making it a symbol of enduring quality and status worldwide.
