Overview

Tilt this Gruen Curvex Precision under raking light and the faceted pyramid crystal stops reading like a piece of crystal and starts reading like cut glass jewelry, the angular planes catching and releasing light independently and the dial beneath rearranging with every degree of wrist movement. In our opinion, this is the Curvex variant that justifies the model’s whole reputation, and it is the kind of vintage detail that has to be on the wrist to do its thing because no photograph quite captures the way the planes interact with a real light source.

The Curvex line is the design that defined Gruen for two decades and the case construction is not a stylistic flourish. When most American makers through the 1930s and 1940s were dropping round movements into rectangular cases and quietly accepting the wasted volume and stiff sit on the wrist, Gruen engineered an actually curved movement and built the case to follow it. The 1935 patent covered the construction, the wrist hugged the watch instead of the watch perching on top of the wrist, and the Precision designation marked here on both dial and movement was Gruen’s house grade for higher-finished and tighter-regulated calibres above the standard production tier.

Inside is the cal. 370, the wide-and-curved fourth-generation Curvex calibre that Gruen released in 1948 and produced into the mid-1950s, a 17-jewel manual wind running at 18,000 vph and one of the genuinely unusual designs in mid-century watchmaking. With the caseback removed for photography the gilt plates carry red and black text reading GRUEN WATCH Cº, PRECISION, CURVEX PAT, SWITZERLAND, SEVENTEEN JEWELS, UNADJUSTED, with PUSH stamped near the setting lever. The train is arranged along the long axis of the case rather than radially as in a conventional movement, and that layout is what allows the whole calibre to physically curve. It is the reason the Curvex sits as flat against the wrist as it does, and the gilt engraving on this example remains crisp with the wheels turning cleanly after our service.

The case is 10K yellow gold filled with a Wadsworth hallmark, the dominant American Gruen case supplier of the era. The outer back is stamped GRUEN, 10K W GOLD FILLED. The inner back tells the fuller story, reading CASED & TIMED IN U.S.A. BY GRUEN WATCH CO, Wadsworth, 10K. GOLD FILLED, L101542, 370 601, which is what locks the reference number for this variant. Case dimensions run 22.5mm across the front by 44mm lug to lug, with an 18mm lug width. The profile shots show the patented curve beautifully and the case retains crisp rectangular edges. There is honest decades-on character consistent with seven or eight decades under wrist, with light surface scuffs visible on the caseback and some darker mellowing along the case edges where the gold fill meets the base metal beneath. That edge character is universal on gold filled cases of this age and reads to us as a watch that has been lived with rather than locked away. The signed Gruen crown with its fine crosshatched grip is original and turns smoothly.

The dial is silvered cream with the kind of even, faint age tone that only comes from real decades of life under crystal. GRUEN sits over CURVEX in the upper register, SWITZERLAND is printed faintly along the lower edge, and the sub-seconds register at six is set inside a squared geometric frame with PRECISION arched above it. The hour markers are applied gold faceted spearheads at every position except twelve and six, which carry small applied gold round dots. The hands are gold dauphine with darker inset center channels that read deep gilt or near-black depending on the angle, an unusually decorative detail for a dress watch of this era that gives the dial real character at every wrist tilt. The faceted pyramid crystal sits over all of it and the way it breaks the lines of the dial when the watch moves under light is what carries this variant. The dial-zone configuration is exactly what should be here for a Curvex Precision and reads as factory-original to us.

We have paired it on a tan brown leather strap with cream contrast saddle stitching and a buckle closure, which picks up the gold tones of the case beautifully and keeps the silhouette honest to the dress watch the Curvex was always meant to be. The buckle holds the period intent and the warm tan against the warm 10K gold filled is the pairing we keep coming back to for this variant.

Serviced in-house at OTTUHR and backed by our 2-year mechanical warranty. For the collector who wants the curved-case story without the squared-off neutrality of most rectangular dress watches of the era, and who values the kind of dial-zone detail that almost no other vintage piece offers, to us this is the Gruen Curvex Precision variant that justifies the model’s reputation in the first place.
