Rolex Chronograph 3181 Description
The Rolex Chronograph reference 3181, produced in the early 1940s, is a very rare and historically interesting model affectionately known as the “Baby Chronograph” due to its small size. Its significance comes from it being one of the earliest examples of an Oyster chronograph, combining Rolex’s patented waterproof case with a chronograph function in a diminutive package. This reference is exceptionally scarce, suggesting it was produced in very limited quantities. The watch features a 29mm stainless steel Oyster case with a screw-down back and crown, making it a robust and water-resistant model for its era. The dial was typically a matte silver finish with Arabic numerals and featured a two-register layout for the chronograph. It was powered by a 10”’ manually wound, rhodium-plated movement. Its rarity and its status as a pioneering, small-sized Oyster chronograph make the reference 3181 a highly significant piece for collectors of vintage Rolex.
