Rolex Datejust 5031 Description

Reference 5031 is an exceptionally rare, first-generation 36mm Oyster Perpetual Datejust, produced for a brief period around 1950. It is a key example of the ‘Ovettone’ or ‘Big Bubbleback’ design. It is powered by the Rolex Caliber A.295, a non-quickset automatic movement featuring a ‘roulette’ date wheel. The technical specification 5031 denotes a ‘Rolesor’ (two-tone) construction, combining a stainless steel case with a solid 18k yellow gold engine-turned bezel. The 36mm case is defined by its prominent, domed ‘bubble back’ and is fitted with an acrylic crystal. Its dials are historically significant as they often lack the ‘Datejust’ text, identifying them as transitional ‘pre-Datejust’ models.
