Rolex Day-Date President 1808 Description
The Rolex Day-Date reference 1808 is an exceptionally rare and seldom-documented model from the 180x series, produced in very limited quantities from the 1960s through the 1970s. This reference is distinguished by its factory-set gem bezel, but it is not the standard brilliant-cut diamond bezel of the ref. 1804. Instead, the 1808 was reserved for more unusual or bespoke gem-setting styles, most notably bezels set with baguette-cut diamonds. The historical context places the 1808 as a special-order or “off-catalog” timepiece, representing a higher tier of personalization and luxury than even the opulent 1804. Its significance lies in this extreme rarity and its showcase of Rolex’s most exclusive haute joaillerie capabilities during that era. Each 1808 can be considered a semi-unique piece, commissioned by Rolex’s most elite clientele. Variations are inherent to the reference, defined by the specific style of the baguette-diamond bezel and often paired with equally extravagant dials, such as full pavé diamond dials or those with baguette-cut diamond hour markers. The case was crafted in 18k yellow or white gold. Mechanically, the 1808 is identical to its brethren, using the robust and reliable non-quickset movement that began as the Caliber 1555 and was upgraded to the higher-beat Caliber 1556 around 1965. All other specifications, including the 36mm Oyster case, 44mm lug-to-lug, and 20mm lug width, are standard for the series. The 1808 remains a “ghost” reference for many, and its appearances at auction are major events for collectors of the highest-end vintage Rolex watches.
