Rolex Day-Date President 6612B Description

The Rolex Day-Date reference 6612B is an exceedingly rare and significant variant from the dawn of the Day-Date collection, produced for an extremely short period between approximately 1957 and 1959. This reference is part of the transitional 66xx series, which introduced critical mechanical upgrades over the first Day-Date models. The “B” in the reference is understood to stand for “Brancards,” the French term for the case lugs, highlighting the model’s defining feature: uniquely wide, prominent lugs that give the watch a more robust and substantial presence on the wrist compared to the standard reference 6612. Historically, the 66xx series is significant for housing the new-at-the-time Caliber 1055, the first Day-Date movement to feature a free-sprung balance with Micro-Stella regulation, allowing it to achieve “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” status. The 6612B combines this technical advancement with its unique case design, making it a transitional model of great interest to collectors. Variations are exceptionally scarce. The reference is typically seen in 18k gold with a smooth bezel, which contrasts with the fluted bezel of the sister reference 6611. Dials were often of the “gilt” variety with “alpha” hands, characteristic of the era. The primary specifications include the 36mm Oyster case, an acrylic crystal, and the technologically advanced (for its time) Caliber 1055. Due to its scarcity and unique lug design, the 6612B is considered a “grail” for many vintage Rolex enthusiasts, representing a fascinating and seldom-seen chapter in the evolution of the iconic Day-Date.
