Rolex Moonphase 8171 Description

The Rolex reference 8171, nicknamed the “Padellone” (Italian for “large frying pan”), is one of the most iconic, complex, and sought-after models in the brand’s history. Produced for a very short period, it is one of only two references Rolex ever made with a moonphase complication. Its historical significance lies in this complexity—a triple calendar (day, date, month) with a moonphase—and its exceptionally large 38mm case, which was massive for its era. Unlike its sibling reference 6062, the 8171 features an elegant, non-Oyster snap-back case, giving it a more refined dress watch profile. The watch was produced in stainless steel, 18k yellow gold, and most rarely, 18k pink gold. The combination of its large size, high complication, extreme rarity, and timeless design makes the “Padellone” a true “grail” watch for elite collectors worldwide.
