Rolex Oyster Perpetual 6031 Description
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual reference 6031 is a highly collectible vintage model from the early 1950s, affectionately known by collectors as the “Big Bubbleback” or “Ovettone” (Italian for “big egg”). This nickname stems from its large, bubble-like case back, which was designed to accommodate the thicker self-winding Perpetual movement of the era. Its production in the post-war boom period signifies a time of growing prosperity and demand for luxury goods. The reference 6031 is significant as one of the earliest examples of a larger-cased Oyster Perpetual with a date complication, a precursor to the iconic Datejust model. The reference 6031 was available in several variations. Case materials included 18k yellow gold, 18k rose gold, and a two-tone combination of stainless steel and rose gold known as Rolesor. The dials were typically silvered or white, featuring applied dart or baton hour markers. A particularly sought-after variation is the one with a “roulette” date wheel, which displays the date in alternating red and black numbers. The bezel could be found in both smooth and engine-turned styles. The combination of its historical importance, rarity, and distinct aesthetic makes the Rolex 6031 a prized piece for vintage Rolex enthusiasts.
