Rolex Oyster Perpetual 6598 Description

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual ref. 6598 is a rare and early midsize automatic watch introduced in the mid-1950s. This reference was notable for combining a 34mm stainless steel case with a fluted or smooth 18k gold bezel, creating a versatile and elegant aesthetic suited for both formal and casual wear. It is powered by the Rolex Caliber 1030, an early automatic movement developed in-house by Rolex that offered improved reliability and bi-directional winding, with a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. The dials were typically minimalist, featuring applied baton markers, dauphine hands, and the signature ‘Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified’ designation on later examples. The acrylic crystal, screw-down crown, and caseback ensured durability and water resistance, in keeping with Rolex’s Oyster standards. It had a lug-to-lug measurement of approximately 42mm and a lug width of 19mm, which helped it wear slightly larger than its 34mm case size might suggest. The 6598 was typically paired with a riveted Oyster bracelet or a leather strap. Owing to its low production numbers and transitional movement technology, the ref. 6598 is now considered highly collectible among vintage Rolex enthusiasts, particularly those drawn to understated models that predate Rolex’s modern sports and luxury divisions.
