Overview

The Seamaster Cosmic is one of the most fascinating, and arguably most underappreciated, chapters in Omega’s long and storied catalog. Introduced in 1966, with full production rolling out in 1967, the Cosmic was Omega’s deliberate play to capture the excitement of the Space Race, a moment when anything that evoked the cosmos carried an irresistible pull. While the Speedmaster was busy earning its stripes on NASA’s wrist, the Cosmic took a different approach entirely, delivering the dressy side of that same optimism. It was aimed at a younger, more style-conscious buyer who wanted genuine Swiss automatic watchmaking at an accessible price, wrapped in case designs that felt genuinely forward-thinking. The Cosmic injected new life into the Seamaster range, and while its production run lasted less than a decade before the quartz crisis reshuffled the deck, the watches it left behind remain some of the most compelling everyday-wearable vintage Omegas you can find.

Powering this reference 166.023 is Omega’s caliber 565, a 24-jewel automatic movement that represents the final and finest expression of Omega’s celebrated 5xx movement family. The cal. 565 was introduced in 1966 as the quickset date evolution of the earlier cal. 562, and it brought a genuinely useful innovation to the mid-range Omega lineup: the ability to advance the date independently via a push-pull crown action, rather than cycling the hands through 24 hours. Running at 19,800 vibrations per hour with a power reserve of approximately 50 hours, the 565 offered the same fundamental architecture that went into Omega’s chronometer-grade movements, just without the COSC certification. Collectors and watchmakers regard it as one of the finest mass-produced automatic calibers of its era, and for good reason. The 565 is robust, easy to service, and capable of impressive accuracy, qualities that have only increased its reputation in the decades since production ended around 1970.

The gold-plated monocoque case on this example measures approximately 33mm in diameter and 36mm lug to lug, with an 18mm lug width and a case thickness around 10mm. The monocoque, or “unishell,” construction means the case is formed as a single piece, with the movement accessed through the crystal side rather than through a removable caseback. This was a clever engineering solution that significantly improved dust and moisture resistance without the need for a screw-down crown or threaded caseback. The caseback itself is stamped with the iconic Seamaster hippocampus seahorse, along with “WATERPROOF” and the reference number 166.023. There is honest wear to the gold plating, most visibly at the lug tips and caseback edges where the base metal shows through, a natural consequence of decades of use that tells you this watch was actually worn and enjoyed. The crown is signed with the Omega logo, and the overall case proportions remain true to their original form.

The dial is where this particular example really shines. A silver sunburst finish radiates from the center, catching light beautifully across its surface and shifting between cool silver and warm champagne depending on the angle. The applied hour indices are substantial, gold-toned rectangles with black enamel inlay that provide excellent legibility and a sense of depth you simply do not get from printed markers. The double baton indices at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o’clock add a sense of symmetry and presence. The handset is a matching gold tone with black enamel inlay and tritium fill, and the sword-style hour and minute hands pair perfectly with a thin, tapered sweep seconds hand. At 3 o’clock, a date window framed in a gold surround offers quick-set functionality via the crown. The “Seamaster” script in an elegant cursive sits above the block-letter “COSMIC” designation, and the T SWISS MADE T notation at 6 o’clock confirms the use of tritium luminous material, dating this piece squarely to the late 1960s. The outer chapter ring with its fine minute hash marks adds one more layer of detail to what is, by any measure, a beautifully composed and remarkably well-preserved dial.

For collectors looking for a genuine entry into vintage Omega at a price that won’t require a second mortgage, the Seamaster Cosmic in gold plate is an incredibly compelling proposition. It offers real mid-century Swiss automatic watchmaking, a sophisticated design language rooted in one of the most exciting eras in human history, and the kind of everyday wearability that makes you want to reach for it morning after morning. This example is presented on an OTTUHR leather strap, and to us, it is a perfect example of why the Cosmic continues to gain admirers with every passing year.
