Overview

We have no idea who R.C.H. was, and to us that is most of the appeal. The initials are all the caseback gives up: outlined serif capitals with small diamond points set between them, no date and no occasion, nothing to chase. Somebody thought enough of this Girard Perregaux Gyromatic to put their name on it, and then wore it long enough to leave the fine web of scratches the back carries now.

What they chose was a linen dial, and a linen dial is not printed. The crosshatch is cut into the metal, overlapping passes of fine engine-turned line laid in two directions until the surface holds a weave. That is why it refuses to sit still. Straight on under a lamp it is a plain silver dress dial, quietly formal, nothing to argue with. Turned in the hand, the weave lights along one axis and shuts down along the other. Photographs flatten it. Wrists do not.

Girard Perregaux was a serious address to buy from. The name traces to 1856 and the pairing of Constant Girard and Marie Perregaux, and in 1889, at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, Girard unveiled La Esmeralda, the tourbillon under three gold bridges that took a gold medal. Nearer to this watch, the company engineered its own automatic winding module rather than buying that system in, and put the name Gyromatic on the dial, printed under the signature here. To us Girard Perregaux is one of the mid-century names most worth rediscovering, and the plain linen-dial dress watches are where that case is easiest to make.

All of that resolves into a 31.5mm case, which is to say a watch built for conversational distance rather than across a room. The proportions do the work: a thin bezel, a wide opening for the dial, faceted lugs that step down toward the strap. The dial is the entire event here, and it only pays out to whoever is close enough to watch it move.

The case is 10k gold filled and stamped 10K GOLD FILLED across the back, with light marks along the band from a life of cuffs and desk edges. Applied gold batons mark the hours, doubled at twelve and six, under gold hands and a sweep seconds that tracks across the weave. SWISS sits alone at the foot of the dial, and there is no lume anywhere on it. The crown still wears its interlocking cipher. A few small age spots have settled into the linen over the decades and we have left every one of them exactly where they are.

This Girard Perregaux Gyromatic has been serviced in-house at OTTUHR and is backed by our 2-year mechanical warranty, on a black leather strap that keeps out of the dial’s way. R.C.H. had taste and no apparent interest in telling anyone about it.
