Movado took its name in 1905 from Esperanto, the invented universal language, where the word means always in motion. It was a confident thing to call yourself in a decade when a wristwatch still had to be wound by hand every morning. For the next forty years the name described an ambition rather than a mechanism. The Movado Kingmatic is where that changed.
Introduced in 1956, the Kingmatic was Movado’s first full-rotor automatic line, and it stayed in production for close to three decades. The distinction matters more than it sounds. Movado had built self-winding watches before, but those used bumper movements, where the weight swings between two sprung buffers and stops short at each end of its travel. A full rotor turns through a complete circle, continuously, for as long as the wrist keeps moving. With the Kingmatic, the name on the dial finally described what was happening underneath it.
Inside this one is the caliber 531, an in-house Movado automatic produced from roughly 1960 to 1967. It belongs to the faster beating of Movado’s two automatic families, running at 21,600 per hour with a sweep seconds hand and a documented power reserve near fifty hours. The 531 was built in both seventeen and twenty-eight jewel versions, and ours is the higher count. The rotor is engraved MOVADO FACTORIES and TWENTY-EIGHT JEWELS, with ADJ. 2 TWO POS. stamped on the bridge beneath it.
Then there is the caseback, which is where this one stops behaving like an ordinary dress piece. It reads 14K. G. FILLED – SUB-SEA across the top, with 28 JEWELS below. Sub-Sea was Movado’s designation for its water-resistant cases, so seeing it on a 14k gold filled dress watch is the quiet surprise here. Treat it as a period stamp rather than a rating: we would not put this one near water. Lift that outer back and the inner cover carries a cartouche reading U.S.A. over MOVADO, the reference 60535, and a serial in the 588000 range. The 60535 matches the reference we have recorded for this case.
The dial is white and has warmed the way these dials do, with honest foxing below the center. Applied markers alternate between ribbed rectangular batons at the quarters and faceted tapered darts at the remaining hours, ringed by a dot minute track. The dauphine hands have gone green in their lume channels. The crown is still signed with the Movado chevron.
The case measures 34mm across and 40.5mm from lug to lug, which is exactly the footprint a 1960s dress watch should have and a good deal more wearable than the number suggests. We are not going to pretend this one is untouched. It was worn, and it looks like it. What it also is: a legible piece of Movado’s mechanical history, in a case stamped with a designation most people never expect to find on a dress watch, priced to reflect the patina rather than ignore it.
