Movado occupies a fascinating position in the landscape of mid-century Swiss watchmaking. Founded in 1881 in La Chaux-de-Fonds by Achille Ditesheim, the brand took its name from the Esperanto word for “always in motion,” a fitting designation for a company that would go on to develop some of the most refined automatic movements of the 20th century. Unlike many of its contemporaries that relied on ébauche suppliers for their calibers, Movado designed and manufactured its own movements in-house, a distinction that placed it in the rarefied company of names like Omega, Longines, and Rolex. The Kingmatic line, introduced in the late 1950s, was the flagship expression of this capability, and the “Sub-Sea” designation within the Kingmatic family indicated enhanced water resistance, giving collectors a watch that bridged the gap between elegant dress piece and capable daily wearer.
The caliber 531 that powers this watch is an in-house Movado automatic movement with 28 jewels, a notably high count that reflects the premium-grade finishing Movado applied to its top-tier calibers. The movement, visible in our photographs with the caseback removed, features a rhodium-plated construction with a straight-line lever escapement, monometallic balance, Movado shock absorption, and a flat balance spring. The rotor is signed “MOVADO FACTORIES” and “SWISS MADE,” with “TWENTY-EIGHT 28” jewels clearly marked. The cal. 531 is the no-date version of this movement family, which means no date window to interrupt the symmetry of the dial, and no quick-set mechanism to add potential failure points. It is a clean, well-engineered automatic movement from a period when Movado was still producing everything under its own roof.
The stainless steel case measures approximately 34mm and features a polished, smooth bezel that gives the watch an understated elegance. The profile shots reveal a slim case with well-defined lugs that taper gently downward, creating a comfortable and refined presence on the wrist. The Movado-signed crown is correct for the reference. The screw-down caseback is engraved “SUB-SEA 28 JEWELS” on the exterior, confirming the water-resistant specification. The inside of the caseback carries the “MOVADO FACTORIES / SWITZERLAND” stamp along with “FAB. SUISSE” and “STAINLESS STEEL.”
The original dial tells a quiet, honest story. The silver surface has developed a gentle overall patina, with some spotting and a warm amber-toned discoloration concentrated around the center and near several of the lume plots. The radium luminous dots at each hour have aged to a rich amber-brown tone that gives the dial warmth and a sense of age that collectors of original, unrestored dials will immediately appreciate. Applied steel baton indices, doubled at the quarter hours, stand cleanly against the dial surface, with applied Arabic numerals at 12 and 6 adding a touch of character to the layout. The Movado logo, “Kingmatic” script, and “28 JEWELS / SUB-SEA” designation are all printed in black and remain legible. The dauphine handset has developed its own light aging, and the center sweep seconds hand completes the time-only configuration. We should note that the dial does show visible spotting and discoloration, particularly around the lower left quadrant. To us, this is the kind of honest, unrestored aging that makes a vintage Movado worth owning. It could easily be refinished, but we would never recommend it.
For the collector who values in-house Swiss movement making, original condition, and the kind of understated mid-century design that works equally well with a suit or a weekend shirt, the Movado Kingmatic Sub-Sea is an exceptionally well-rounded proposition. This was a serious watch from a serious manufacture, and it carries itself with the quiet confidence that only an in-house movement and an original dial can provide.
