Overview

Lay this Baume Mercier Hampton XL flat on the page and what you see first is the architecture: a long polished steel tank case, a glossy white dial, blued steel leaf hands, and a small seconds register at six o’clock printed inside a rectangular minute frame that runs from the 12 numeral straight down to the sub-dial. In our opinion the Hampton XL is one of the genuinely successful late-twentieth-century reinterpretations of the Art Deco tank, and this MV045063 in stainless steel on the integrated bracelet is the configuration that shows the design at its most confident.

Baume & Mercier has been signing watches out of Geneva since 1830, which puts the house among the oldest continuously operating Swiss watchmakers still working under its founding name. The Hampton line was launched in 1996 and quickly became the brand’s defining contemporary signature, a deliberately rectangular response to a market that had spent the previous decade chasing round sports watches. The Hampton XL followed as the larger-format expression of that idea, scaled up for a wrist that wanted the proportions of a 1930s American tank watch without the period-correct dimensions. The phi (Φ) logo printed at the top of this dial is the same maker’s mark Baume & Mercier formally introduced back in 1964, which gives a quiet continuity between the brand’s mid-century work and its late-1990s revival of the rectangular case.

The movement inside is a Swiss-made quartz caliber, signed and finished to the brand’s standard, driving the hour, minute, and small seconds hands without a date complication to crowd the architecture. We tend to underrate late-century Swiss quartz in collector conversations, and we think that is a mistake on watches like this one. The Hampton XL was designed from the outside in: a slim case, a clean dial, and a movement that holds within a few seconds a month is exactly the right engineering choice for the silhouette. A mechanical caliber in this case profile would have asked for a thicker back, a wider crown, and an entirely different wrist presence. The quartz movement here is the reason the watch sits as cleanly as it does on the wrist.

The case is polished stainless steel measuring 24.5mm across the dial opening with a 41mm lug-to-lug, an 18mm lug spacing where the bracelet attaches, and a flat profile that reads quietly under a shirt cuff. The flanks are mirror-polished, with shallow surface wear and the kind of fine scratching that comes honestly from twenty-plus years of being worn. The crown sits at three o’clock and is signed with the Baume & Mercier phi logo, which you can see crisply in the side photograph. The caseback is a smooth, slightly tarnished steel surface with the engraving cleanly stamped: BAUME & MERCIER over GENEVE, the phi logo, then STAINLESS STEEL over ACIER INOX, with the serial 3355127 and the reference MV045063 below. The convention of stamping both STAINLESS STEEL and ACIER INOX is the same bilingual case-back tradition that runs straight through twentieth-century Swiss watchmaking, here continued into the modern era as a brand signature.

The dial is the headline. A glossy white field carries large open Arabic numerals at 12, 3, and 9 in a slightly stylized late-Deco font, with small black-painted square markers tucked at each remaining hour position. Inside the field, a printed rectangular minute track frames the dial signature and runs down to enclose the small seconds register at six. The signature reads BAUME & MERCIER over GENEVE in clean block type, with the phi (Φ) logo above it. The hour and minute hands are blued steel leaf-pattern with a central spine, and the small seconds hand at six matches them in the same blued tone. There is no lume on the dial or the hands, which is correct for the model and the era, and the hand colour reads warmly against the bright white field. SWISS MADE is printed in small block letters at the bottom edge. The factory glossy white finish has held up cleanly with no spotting, no foxing, and no signs of refinishing.

The watch comes on the matching Baume & Mercier stainless steel bracelet, a wide multi-link design that integrates flush with the case and tapers into a signed butterfly clasp marked with the phi logo. The bracelet shows the same fine surface wear as the case, polished links pulling honest mid-light scratches across the centre rows, with the clasp mechanism intact and the linkage tight on articulation. The whole assembly sits flat on the wrist in the way only properly engineered integrated bracelets do, with no flex at the lug junction.
