Girard Perregaux Gyromatic Ref. 9276 HA Day/Date Cal. 480-369

$675.00

A late 1960s Girard-Perregaux Gyromatic in a sharp gold-capped cushion case, anchored by a wonderfully unusual chocolate brown dial with day/date at three. Applied gold ribbed baton markers and matching baton hands play beautifully against the deep cocoa surface, while the automatic caliber 480-369 with its signed Gyromatic rotor hums quietly inside. Mounted on our taupe textured calfskin strap, this is a quietly groovy slice of late 1960s Swiss design that punches well above its weight.

Overview

Girard-Perregaux is, in our opinion, one of the most underappreciated names in serious vintage collecting. With roots running back to 1791 and a manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds that has produced its own movements continuously for the better part of two centuries, GP sits in genuinely rarefied air alongside the very biggest Swiss houses. Yet for decades these watches have flown beneath the radar, and few examples are more emblematic of that quiet excellence than the Gyromatic.

First introduced in 1957, the Gyromatic was Girard-Perregaux’s answer to the early limitations of self-winding technology. Dissatisfied with the wear characteristics of the off-the-shelf automatic ebauches available at the time, GP engineered their own winding module built around two specially developed “Gyrotron” wheels, each fitted with seven rubies to keep friction at an absolute minimum. The result was a smoother, more efficient, and notably more durable automatic system, and the Gyromatic name became GP’s flagship designation for self-winding watches across decades and dozens of references. The caliber 480-369 powering this example is a beautifully executed evolution of that lineage, automatic-winding with day and date complications, 17 jewels, and a full rotor proudly signed Girard-Perregaux Gyromatic Swiss. As you can see in our movement photograph, the gilt finishing has aged with remarkable warmth, all golden plating, crisp engravings, and the quiet confidence of a movement designed by people who knew exactly what they were doing.

This particular example, reference 9276 HA stamped between the lugs at six, dates to the late 1960s and showcases GP at the height of its design adventurousness. The case is a fantastic cushion shape with sharp, angled lugs that read almost architectural in person, executed in 18K gold electroplate over a stainless steel back as confirmed by the caseback stampings. The slim profile and broad, flat case sides give it a quiet sportiness that feels distinctly of its era, sitting somewhere between a dress watch and the integrated sport pieces that would explode in popularity a few years later.

But it’s the dial that really sets this one apart. A deep, saturated chocolate brown surface, the kind of warm, earthy tone that GP and a handful of other houses leaned into during the late 1960s and early 1970s, providing the perfect canvas for the applied gold baton markers with their distinctive vertical ribbing. Each marker catches the light differently as the watch moves, throwing tiny linear reflections across the dial surface. The matching baton hands carry small lume inserts that have aged to a soft cream, while the day/date complication at three sits within a neat black-bordered window, the GIRARD-PERREGAUX GYROMATIC text in clean white print at nine. The original Girard-Perregaux signed crown is still in place, embossed with the unmistakable GP monogram, and the caseback retains its stamped GP knight emblem along with the period correct markings.

Condition is honest and appropriate for the age. There are some fine surface scratches across the gold-capped case sides and a touch of plating wear at the lugs, the kind of gentle softening you would expect from a watch that has been worn and enjoyed across the decades rather than locked away. The dial itself remains exceptionally clean, with no spotting or fading to speak of, and the original crystal carries only the faintest light marks that a polish would lift if desired.

We’ve paired it with our taupe textured calfskin strap with contrast white stitching, which echoes the warm brown of the dial while keeping the overall look grounded and contemporary. To us, this is exactly the kind of watch that rewards the collector who has moved past the obvious choices and is looking for real character. A serious manufacture name, a quietly clever movement, an unusual dial color, and a case design that genuinely stands out on the wrist. A fantastic everyday companion for someone who wants something a little different, or a smart entry point for anyone looking to start exploring Girard-Perregaux’s deep and rewarding back catalogue.
