There is an undeniable romance to the great American watchmaking houses, and among them, Gruen holds a special place for its mastery of the elegant dress watch. This Gruen 21 Precision is a spectacular artifact from the height of the Art Deco design movement, a period of bold architectural lines and unbridled creativity. Gruen was a powerhouse, operating with a unique Swiss-American model. They designed their movements in America, had them produced to exacting standards at their “Precision Factory” in Biel, Switzerland, and then cased and timed them at their “Aegler” facility in Cincinnati, Ohio. However, this particular watch houses something even more special: a Caliber 335, a beautifully crafted 21-jewel movement that was made right in the USA. The “21” on the dial proudly denotes the high jewel count, a mark of a top-tier “Precision” grade movement. Furthermore, the movement is a part of Gruen’s legendary “Veri-Thin” family, an innovation that allowed for incredibly svelte and elegant watch profiles, a true feat of engineering in the 1940s.
This specific example is, in our opinion, an absolute knockout and a fantastic showcase of Gruen’s design prowess. The gold-filled “tank” style case is pure Art Deco, but it’s the lugs that steal the show. The dramatic, fluted or “rippled” design is architecturally brilliant, giving the watch a sculptural quality and an incredible presence on the wrist that belies its classic size. The silver dial features a handsome mix of applied gold-tone Arabic numerals and dot hour markers, anchored by a beautifully executed subsidiary seconds dial. The original alpha handset is perfectly preserved, and the signed Gruen crown is the finishing touch on a remarkably cohesive and stylish package.
