Overview

The caseback tells you most of what you need to know before you even turn the watch over to read the dial. “1946 SERVICE 1966 / S. E. PRICE / DELTA AIR LINES” is engraved cleanly across the 10k gold filled back, a twenty-year service award presented by Delta in 1966 to an employee whose tenure stretched from the propeller era into the early jet age. To us, the Hamilton Thin-O-Matic Masterpiece is one of the most quietly compelling mid-century American dress watches you can still buy with a real story attached, and a presentation example like this one is the way we like to find them.

Hamilton’s Masterpiece line existed for exactly this purpose. Through its Presentation and Awards Division, Hamilton built the Masterpiece series as a corporate-gift program, distributed directly to companies rather than through retail showcases, and intentionally varied in case-and-dial combination so that the recipient could not walk into a jeweler and look up the price their employer had paid. That backstory is why so many Thin-O-Matic Masterpiece pieces surface today with engraved casebacks naming the recipient, the company, and the years of service. They were never anonymous off-the-shelf watches. Each one was specified for a particular person, on a particular occasion, by a particular employer.

The Thin-O-Matic name itself points to the mechanical interest of these watches. Hamilton’s Thin-O-Matic family was built on micro-rotor automatic architecture, the same breakthrough that drove the late-1950s and early-1960s race for the world’s thinnest self-winding watch. Rather than mount the winding rotor on top of the movement plate, the micro-rotor sits within the plate itself, dropping overall thickness dramatically and letting Hamilton case the Thin-O-Matic in genuinely svelte gold-filled and solid-gold cases. The caliber 663 from 1957, a Hamilton-finished version of the Buren-developed micro-rotor architecture, was the family that started it, and through the mid-1960s Hamilton kept iterating on the platform until Hamilton purchased Buren outright in 1966, the same year this watch was presented to S. E. Price.

The case is 10k yellow gold filled, round, 33mm across with a 40mm lug-to-lug span and 18mm lugs, sized for the mid-century dress wrist but wholly wearable today. The polished bezel and lugs show the soft, even golden tone you want from period-correct gold-filled work, with the kind of light surface wear that reads as honest use rather than refinishing. The signed crown sits cleanly at 3 with a faint H still legible in the side profile. The caseback, beyond the presentation engraving, retains its original brushed finish and shows the gentle pillow of decades on a wrist without ever having been polished down.

The dial is where this Thin-O-Matic earns its bench time. A cream-toned silvered dial carries the cross-H Hamilton logo above “HAMILTON / MASTERPIECE” at 12, with the “Thin-o-matic” script signature flowing below center toward 6, exactly as the model called for. The hour track combines applied gold baton indices at most positions with Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9, all framed by a fine dot minute track that runs the full perimeter. The gold dauphine-style hour and minute hands carry their original finishing and have aged in step with the dial. Across the cream canvas you can see the soft constellation of age spotting that comes from sixty years inside a gold-filled case, character we would never touch. The dial is factory original. The patina is the watch.

We have paired the watch with a black grained leather strap with cream contrast stitching and an OTTUHR signed buckle, a combination that picks up the warm cream of the dial without competing with it and lets the polished gold-filled case do the heavy visual work. The 18mm lug width keeps strap swaps simple if a future owner wants to reach for something more formal in cordovan or alligator.

Serviced in-house at OTTUHR and backed by our 2-year mechanical warranty, this is the kind of vintage Hamilton we get genuinely excited to bring in. The Hamilton Thin-O-Matic Masterpiece sits in a strange and wonderful corner of mid-century American horology, a corporate-presentation piece with a real Swiss-finished micro-rotor automatic at its heart, engraved for a Delta Air Lines lifer in the year of the jet. For the collector who values provenance and quiet design over wrist presence and brand status, who would rather wear a watch with a name on the back than a name everyone recognizes on the front, this is exactly the sort of piece we love finding. To us, S. E. Price had good taste, and good employers.
