Overview

The seconds hand on this Longines Admiral HF 2301-4 knows where to stop. When the crown is pulled to set the time, the hand does not freeze mid-lap the way an ordinary hacking seconds would; it keeps running until it reaches twelve, then halts there. Setting the watch to the exact second becomes simple: wait for the top of the minute, push the crown home, and the hand starts from zero. Longines built this zero-reset into the seconds-hand versions of its 69xx hand-wound family, and the 6942 inside this watch, introduced in 1974, is the sweep-seconds version.

The two letters printed under ADMIRAL describe the rest of the movement. HF stands for haute fréquence, French for high frequency: the balance of the 6942 beats 28,800 times an hour, eight beats every second. The faster beat moves the center seconds around the dial in finer, smoother steps. The same two letters appeared on the Longines Flagship of those years.

The Admiral line is better known for its automatic, date-window models. This Admiral HF winds by hand and has no date at all, so nothing interrupts the white dial between the center and the minute track. Winding becomes a small morning habit, and the crown that does it is signed with the Longines name above the winged hourglass.

The case belongs to the 1970s, when the Admiral left the round, Calatrava-like shapes of its earlier years behind. Its outline is angular and cushion-like, with broad shoulders that flow into the lugs, and only the dial opening is round. Brushed top surfaces meet polished flanks, so the steel alternates between satin and shine as the wrist turns. It measures 34mm across and 40mm from end to end, the extra length carried by those shoulders.

The dial is white with fine radial brushing. Pointed baton hands and black-inset hour markers sit on it, with yellow-toned plots at the quarters and matching inserts in the hands, and T SWISS MADE T at six marks the tritium era. The inner case back carries reference 2301 4 and the number 6942, the same number engraved on the movement it holds. Fine scratches mark the steel, and a few minor specks sit on the dial.

It wears a brown strap. Each time the crown comes out, the seconds hand finishes its lap and waits at twelve for the next minute to begin.
