Overview

Christmas Day, 1940: this Movado Acvatic was a gift, and the caseback still carries the proof. The initials W. J. M. sit above the date 12-25-40, worn long enough to earn the marks the watch shows now. More than eighty years later we can still read them.

That date sits in the heart of Movado’s manufacture years. Long before the brand became shorthand for a single museum dial, Movado built its own movements in its own factories, and this watch says so plainly. The inner caseback is stamped Movado Factories, Switzerland, over the reference number 11729 and the case serial 174870. It is the kind of detail that separates a genuine mid-century manufacture from a company that bought its calibers by the crate.

Reference 11729 belongs to Movado’s Acvatic line, the company’s answer to the interwar push for water resistance, and the case is built around that idea. A Swiss cross and the word Patent sit beside the steel mark inside the back, the crystal domes up out of the bezel, and the crown is signed and fluted. The signature, though, is the lugs. They flare down and out from the case in faceted, almost architectural planes, the shape collectors reach for the word scarab to describe. On the wrist they give a compact watch real presence.

The dial has aged into something warmer than it left the factory. A cream, eggshell base has taken on a honey bloom through the center, even and unforced, the sort of patina that reads as decades rather than damage. Gilt Arabic numerals mark twelve, three and nine, a small running seconds register sits at six, and the printing under the hands still reads Non Magnetic, a genuine selling point in an era of telephones, motors and radios. The blued hands hold what is left of their luminous fill. Nothing here has been touched up.

Behind the dial is a Movado caliber in the same honest register: fifteen jewels, Swiss made, signed by the maker, and marked unadjusted, which is exactly what a well built everyday watch of this class carried. It is not pretending to be a chronometer and does not need to. It is a manufacture movement doing the job it was made for, which after this many years is its own kind of endorsement.

The steel case wears its history in the open, with the light scratches and softened edges expected of a watch that was actually worn. It arrives on a fresh black buffalo grain leather strap in sixteen millimeter, ready for the wrist. What it amounts to is a datable piece of Movado’s own manufacture: a 1940 Acvatic, reference 11729, caliber 150MN, with a name on the back and a story that checks out.
