Overview

There was a stretch of the twentieth century when Movado deserved to be spoken about in the same breath as Omega, Longines, and Jaeger-LeCoultre, and the Cal. 431 is one of the best arguments for that case. To us, this Movado Automatic 431 in Ref. 11201 reads as a quietly serious dress automatic from the brand’s manufacture era, and the kind of piece that reminds you what Movado was actually producing before the Museum dial became the default mental image.

Movado was founded in 1881 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, and across the first three quarters of the twentieth century it racked up a long list of observatory chronometry prizes and movement patents that vintage collectors are now rediscovering. The brand’s pre-quartz output is, in our opinion, dramatically under-priced relative to what it actually is on the wrist.

The Movado Cal. 431 is a 28-jewel automatic that Movado built in-house, and the jewel count alone tells you this was a premium tier offering rather than a parts-bin movement. Twenty-eight jewels in a mid-century time-only automatic is not where Movado had to land, it is where they chose to land, and the rotor signature visible on this caliber confirms exactly that: “MOVADO FACTORIES 28 TWENTY-EIGHT JEWELS SWISS MADE” runs along the edge of the movement, with red cap jewels showing through the bridges and the bridge work finished cleanly. It is a wonderfully characterful caliber to live with, and it is one of the most direct ways into the manufacture side of Movado’s golden era.

The 35mm stainless steel case is in honest, age-appropriate condition with sharp lugs, a clean polished bezel, and a side profile that wears slimly under a cuff. The snap-back caseback shows the concentric machined finish typical of the era, with the expected light case-opener marks and surface wear from sixty-plus years of being a watch rather than a museum piece. Pop the back and the inner caseback is stamped verbatim “FAB. SUISSE”, reference “11201”, serial “453169”, and “ST. INOX STEEL” beneath the small Movado Factories hallmark. That serial and reference pair gives us a confident anchor for what we have, and lands the watch in the mid-1960s based on Movado’s reference and numbering conventions of the period. The crown is signed and appears period-correct.

The dial is where the Movado Automatic 431 earns its place on a wrist. The cream surface has aged into a warm, ivory tone with no flaking, no refinish indicators, and the kind of even patina that only an honest original dial develops. Applied gilt double-bar batons run around the entire dial, one parallel pair per hour, which is a more architectural and confident layout than the single-baton dials that dominate this era. Small aged lume plots sit on the outer dial edge flanking each baton position, oxidized to a coppery amber that picks up the gilt of the markers beautifully. The “MOVADO” signature sits at the top in clean sans-serif caps, with “automatic” in italic script directly beneath, “431” calling out the caliber, “28 JEWELS” printed above the six, and “SWITZERLAND” anchoring the bottom edge. The gilt dauphine handset is original and shows the gentle, faceted oxidation that confirms the original lacquer is still doing its job rather than having been touched up.

What seals this Movado as a complete package is the original Movado Factories stainless steel beads-of-rice bracelet still attached, which is increasingly rare on these and which always lifts a vintage dress watch into something more cohesive than the same case on a generic leather strap. The bracelet is signed on the outer fold-over clasp with the Movado “M” emblem, and the underside of the clasp carries verbatim “MOVADO FACTORIES SWISS / STAINLESS STEEL” on one half and the reference “406/408-704-502” on the other. The mesh has the gentle, draping quality that beads-of-rice construction was always supposed to deliver, and it pairs the watch back to its factory presentation in a way that no aftermarket strap can replicate.

Serviced in-house at OTTUHR and backed by our 2-year mechanical warranty, this Movado Automatic 431 is for the collector who values manufacture-tier mid-century Swiss watchmaking at a Movado price, and who appreciates the increasingly uncommon experience of buying a vintage piece on its original signed bracelet. To us, vintage Movado of this caliber remains one of the most under-appreciated propositions in the collecting space, and pieces like this Ref. 11201 are exactly why.
