There’s a special place in the collector’s heart for the watches that defined the “neo-vintage” era, the late 90s and early 2000s. These are timepieces that blend the robust, modern build quality we expect today with a distinctive, now-classic design language. The TAG Heuer 2000 is, without question, one of the quintessential watches of that period. It was the bedrock of the modern TAG Heuer brand, a professional-grade dive watch that was tough, stylish, and instantly recognizable. This reference, the WN2111, is a fantastic example of the 2000 series at its peak, offering the reliability of an automatic movement in a design that is both nostalgic and perfectly wearable today.
First launched by Heuer in 1982, the 2000 series was a cornerstone model that successfully transitioned through the “TAG” acquisition, becoming a symbol of the new brand’s identity. It was designed to be a true do-anything, go-anywhere sports watch, built on six key principles: 200 meters of water resistance, a screw-down crown, a unidirectional rotating bezel, a sapphire crystal, luminous markings, and a double-safety clasp. This was a formula for success that cemented TAG Heuer’s reputation for building serious tool watches. By the time this WN2111 was produced in the early 2000s, the design had been refined, but the core DNA remained. Powering it is a reliable Swiss automatic movement, likely the venerable ETA 2824-2, a true workhorse caliber known for its accuracy and durability.
This particular example is a fantastic representation of the reference. Housed in a robust stainless steel case, it features the iconic 2000-series unidirectional bezel with its engraved numerals and signature polished “rider tabs” at the cardinal points—a design element that is pure TAG Heuer. The dial is a deep, glossy black, featuring a handsome and highly legible layout with large, applied Arabic numerals at 12, 6, and 9, reminiscent of classic explorer dials. The luminous sword hands and applied rectangular indices are crisp and offer excellent low-light visibility. What really defines the wearing experience, however, is the fantastic brushed steel bracelet. It’s a design unique to this era, incredibly comfortable and visually distinctive, making the watch feel like a solid, integrated piece of equipment.
