Overview

The dial does the talking on this Zodiac Hermetic. What started life in the early 1950s as a glossy black lacquer surface has spent the last seven decades transforming itself into something none of us has seen quite this way before, a dense, crystalline scatter of white and silver flecks distributed across a midnight field that, in our opinion, reads less like aged paint and more like a long-exposure photograph of a winter sky. To us, this is the kind of patina that separates a vintage watch you appreciate from one you actually cannot stop looking at.

Zodiac was founded in 1882 by Ariste Calame in Le Locle, Switzerland, and by the 1950s the brand was producing some of the most quietly ambitious watches of the postwar era. They were building dive watches alongside Rolex and Blancpain, pushing into early GMT territory, and turning out a deep catalog of dress and sport pieces that competed directly with anything from Omega or Longines on quality of finishing and architecture. The Hermetic line was Zodiac’s answer to the demand for a sealed, robust dress watch you could trust day to day. The name itself, derived from the Greek for hermetically sealed, was a quiet promise that the engineering ran deeper than the gold filled exterior suggested.

Powering this watch is the Zodiac-signed Caliber 1624, a 17-jewel Swiss automatic with Incabloc shock protection. The rotor here carries the full factory inscription, Zodiac Ltd., a boxed 1624, and SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS SWISS, signed in the warm gold lettering Zodiac used for their movement marking through the middle of the century. Visible ruby jewels are seated cleanly across the bridges and an automatic winding rotor sweeps overhead to keep the mainspring tensioned. The 1624 sits in that sweet spot Zodiac occupied in this era, factory signed and finished, technically conservative in the best sense, and built to be serviced indefinitely. There is a reason these still run.

The case on this Zodiac Hermetic measures 34mm across, with a 40mm lug-to-lug and 18mm lug spacing. Construction is 10k yellow gold filled over a stainless steel back, and the gold here is the thick, real, bonded layer that ages gracefully rather than the thin electrodeposit of true gold plating. The sculpted lugs carry a faceted chamfer along their top edges that catches light beautifully and gives the case its visual signature. Honest surface wear is visible across the bezel, around the lugs, and along the case flanks, the kind of marks that come from a watch that was clearly enjoyed and not babied. The outer caseback is stamped verbatim INCABLOC, 10K G.F. TOP STEEL BACK D&A, WATERPROOF, and Zodiac in script around its perimeter, separated by four small star markers, with the classic concentric machined turning at center. The inner caseback carries the Zodiac signature and the case serial 594556 alongside a small set of handwritten watchmaker case-opening marks.

Returning to the dial, the Zodiac crosshair-in-diamond logo sits cleanly under the 12, with the Zodiac script just below. A stylized applied gold Arabic 12 anchors the top of the dial, and applied gold dagger indices ring the remaining eleven hour positions, each one intact and showing the warm tone of their original gold application. The hour and minute hands are the original gold dauphine pair, faceted with a central ridge and carrying their own honest patina. There is no central seconds hand on this layout, which suits the dress-watch architecture of the Hermetic and lets the dial breathe. As for the patina itself, this is factory original ageing, not refinishing, not enhancement, and not the kind of uniform mottle you see on tropical-finish reproductions. The crystalline speckling concentrates densely toward the center and softens around the perimeter, where a faint warm halo bleeds in from the rehaut, and the surrounding black has shifted into deeper charcoal in places. It is exactly the kind of unique, unrepeatable surface that the vintage market has spent the last few years figuring out how to value properly.

We have it on a cognac brown leather strap with two-stitch contrasting cream tabs at each end and a casual handmade feel that suits the watch beautifully. The brown leather plays warmly against the gold filled case and pulls the deep cosmic black of the dial forward without competing with it.

Serviced in-house at OTTUHR and backed by our 2-year mechanical warranty, this Zodiac Hermetic is for the collector who would rather own one dial they cannot stop looking at than ten dials that all look the same. To us, this is not a damaged watch wearing the language of patina. It is one of those once-in-a-while pieces where the watchmaking and the seven decades that followed it have collaborated on something that, honestly, no one could plan.
