Overview

Say the name Gruen and most collectors picture the curved Curvex or a wafer-thin dress piece from the 1930s. Set those aside for a moment. What sits in front of you here is a quieter chapter: a vintage Gruen Precision from the 1960s whose silver sunburst dial is set with five small diamonds, and in our opinion it is the kind of honest mid-century dress watch that gets overlooked precisely because it does not shout.

The word printed under the Gruen signature is not marketing. From around 1922 the company built and ran its own Swiss movement works in Biel, a plant it called the Precision Factory, and from the 1930s onward every Gruen Swiss movement came out of that building. The factory kept running until 1977, when the premises passed to Aegler, the firm that supplied Rolex. So when a Gruen dial reads Precision, it is pointing at a real address rather than a slogan, and that small piece of provenance is most of why we wanted this one.

Behind the dial sits Gruen’s own caliber N510R, a 17-jewel manual-wind movement from the brand’s 510 family, beating at 18,000 vibrations per hour. The bridges are signed GRUEN WATCH Cº and SWISS, marked SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS, with the caliber number N510R stamped plainly alongside. They also read UNADJUSTED, and we will not pretend otherwise: this is a dependable everyday grade, not a chronometer, and the watch never asked to be mistaken for one. We find that candor easier to like than the alternative.

The case measures 34mm across, 41mm lug to lug, on 18mm lugs, a genuinely wearable mid-century size. It is built as a base-metal case with a stainless steel back, so read it correctly: not gold-filled, not solid gold. The snap-back is signed GRUEN on the outside, while the inner cover carries the stampings W M R WATCH CASE CORP., 510, and CASE MADE IN HONG KONG. A Swiss heart in a globally sourced case is exactly what a working Gruen of this era was, and we like that the watch says so plainly. Expect light surface marks on the polished flanks and a softly swirled caseback, the honest record of a watch that was worn rather than stored.

The dial is the reason to look twice. A silver sunburst throws light outward from the center, and against it sit applied diamond-set markers at twelve, two, four, eight and ten, with slim baton indexes at three and nine and a faceted wedge standing over the small-seconds register at six. The signature reads GRUEN above PRECISION, with SWISS printed at the foot of the dial. The dauphine hands and the diamond markers are original to the dial, and the faint freckling across the silver is age rather than damage. We would not change a thing about it.

On the wrist it rides on a honey leather strap finished with an OTTUHR signed buckle, a warm tan that flatters the cool silver dial and the bright case without trying too hard. Compact, characterful, and quietly dressy, this is a diamond dial that reads as restraint instead of flash.
