Overview

The Omega Seamaster Chronograph is one of the most quietly compelling sports chronographs of the late 1960s. While its sibling the Speedmaster was busy making history on the Moon, the Seamaster chronograph line was developing its own loyal following among enthusiasts who appreciated a slightly different aesthetic, a more sculptural case, and the same legendary Omega mechanical DNA. The Reference 145.016 sits at the heart of this family, and among collectors who know, it represents one of the best values in the vintage Omega chronograph universe.

Introduced in the late 1960s as the successor to the Ref. 145.006, the 145.016 marked the transition from the revered column-wheel Caliber 321 to the cam-switched Caliber 861. While purists may lament the loss of the column wheel, the 861 is hardly a compromise. This is the same movement that powered the Speedmaster Professional through the rest of its legendary run, a robust 17-jewel hand-wound chronograph beating at 21,600 vibrations per hour with a 48-hour power reserve. It is, by any reasonable measure, one of the great chronograph calibers of the 20th century. The 145.016 houses it inside a distinctive tonneau-shaped stainless steel case measuring 38mm across, with brushed surfaces, recessed round pushers, and the Seamaster’s iconic seahorse medallion on the caseback. It’s a case shape that feels distinctly of its era, with a muscularity and presence that round-cased chronographs of the period simply don’t deliver.

This particular example wears the reverse panda dial, arguably the most striking configuration available in the 145.016 family. The matte black dial provides a dramatic canvas for three contrasting white subsidiary registers, while pad-printed luminous indices and the signature orange chronograph seconds hand give the face an unmistakable sportiness. The “T SWISS MADE T” designation at six o’clock confirms the original tritium luminous material, which has aged beautifully here, the index plots turning a warm, honeyed amber that pairs gorgeously with the creamy tone the registers have taken on over the decades. What truly sets this dial apart, however, is the patina that has developed across the black surface. A fine speckling has appeared over time, creating what collectors sometimes call a “starry night” effect, a kind of organic texture that transforms the dial from simply black to something far more alive and atmospheric. It’s the kind of aging you can’t fake and can’t buy on command.

The stainless steel case remains in strong, honest condition, with the original brushed finishing still clearly present across the flat surfaces and the characteristic tonneau silhouette retaining its intended proportions. The signed Omega crown sits crisply between the two recessed pump pushers, and the case profile reveals good, unpolished thickness. The caseback carries its seahorse medallion and the 145.016-68 reference stamp inside. The Caliber 861 inside is clean, with its characteristic copper-toned bridges and plates looking exactly as you’d want to see them. Some light surface scratches on the caseback are consistent with decades of honest wear, exactly the kind of life-lived character we look for.

For the collector who appreciates the Speedmaster aesthetic but craves something a little different, a little less expected, the Seamaster Chronograph 145.016 in reverse panda is a fantastic proposition. It offers the same legendary Omega hand-wound chronograph movement, wrapped in a case that feels more sculptural and more distinctly late-’60s than the Speedmaster’s more restrained profile. Worn on its current leather strap, this is a chronograph with serious wrist presence and a dial that rewards close inspection every single time you look down.
