Overview

Three Omega model lines meet in the Omega Seamaster 167.070. Its case is the plain, square-edged screw-back design Omega used for its Geneve line. The movement is caliber 551, a chronometer Omega made for the Constellation. The dial, silver and without a date window, says Seamaster. Stamped one above the other inside the back are the Geneve number 165.070 and the Seamaster number 167.070, so the case answers to both names.

The movement brings its own family with it. Omega was already fitting caliber 551 to the steel Constellation 167.005 by 1963, a self-winding chronometer for its flagship line. The dial here keeps that watch’s manners, with OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED set beneath CHRONOMETER in the Constellation style. A Seamaster name sits under Constellation wording on the same dial, with an automatic chronometer behind it.

The case points the other way. Geneve had become Omega’s entry-level line by the late 1960s, the plain end of the range. Omega’s gold Geneve of the same years, the 18k reference 137.001, carried a hand-wound chronometer, the caliber 602. This one pairs a Geneve-style case in steel with an automatic chronometer from the top of the catalog.

This example’s dial stays quiet about all of it. The silver surface has a fine starburst finish under an applied Omega symbol, the black lettering is spaced a little loosely, and the Seamaster script at the bottom uses the fat S. Applied baton markers carry black inlays, and the lower edge reads T SWISS MADE T for tritium lume.

Its caliber 551 is numbered 26300815, which places the movement around 1968. Omega finished the case with strong lugs, crisp edges and a soft radial brushing that looks almost matte from a distance, and the screw-in back is engraved WATERPROOF with no seahorse emblem. This example, 35mm across, shows fine scratches on the case and a heavily scratched back, light spotting toward the dial edge and dark specks on the hands. On the black ostrich strap we have fitted, it passes for a plain silver Seamaster until the chronometer lines on the dial and the second number inside the back give it away.
