Overview

Hamilton’s asymmetric models from the late 1950s and early 1960s represent, without question, some of the most collectible and visually exciting American watches ever produced. This was a period when Hamilton, still manufacturing movements in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was pushing the boundaries of case design with an audacity that rivaled anything coming out of Switzerland. Inspired by the Space Age optimism and atomic-era aesthetics that were transforming American industrial design, Hamilton unleashed a series of models with case shapes that defied convention: swooping, angular, asymmetrical forms that looked like they belonged on the wrist of a character in a science fiction film. The Khyber, introduced in 1958 and produced through 1962, is one of the most compelling and collectible entries in this remarkable lineup.

The Khyber’s keystone-shaped case is its defining feature. Wider at the top than at the bottom, it creates a trapezoidal silhouette that is both bold and surprisingly elegant. It’s the kind of design that could easily have tipped into gimmickry, but Hamilton’s proportions are so carefully considered that the result is instead a watch that feels architecturally purposeful, as if the case were designed around the idea of drawing the eye upward toward twelve o’clock. The 10K gold filled construction provides genuine warmth and weight, and the stainless steel caseback is stamped “Hamilton” and “Stainless Steel Back, 10K Gold Filled Bezel, S&W.” The inner caseback confirms the Lancaster, PA provenance with serial number S182043 and the S&W case manufacture.

Powering the Khyber is Hamilton’s Caliber 730, a 17-jewel, American-made manual-wind movement. This is a proper Lancaster caliber, the 8/0 size movement that Hamilton deployed across many of their finest mid-century wristwatches. Engraved “Hamilton 730, 17 Jewels, Adjusted, U.S.A.,” it is a beautifully constructed movement with visible ruby jewels, Geneva striping on the bridges, and gilt gear train. The “Adjusted” designation indicates that this movement was regulated for positional accuracy, a mark of quality that Hamilton reserved for their better calibers. There is something deeply meaningful about a watch that still carries an American-made, American-adjusted movement inside its original American-designed case, and the Khyber delivers on that promise.

This particular example features the earlier dial variant with embossed numerals and markers, placing it in the 1958 to 1959 production window. The warm cream dial carries stylized Arabic numerals at 12, 3, and 9, rendered in a bold, slightly Art Deco-influenced typography that is quintessentially Hamilton. Sharp dagger indices mark the remaining hours, and a subsidiary seconds register at six o’clock adds classical depth to the layout. The Hamilton name is printed cleanly, and the original gold lance-shaped hour and minute hands show warm, honest patina that has mellowed beautifully. The dial itself shows gentle aging consistent with its nearly seven decades, with light marks and a creamy warmth that has developed over the years, lending it real character and authenticity.

The 10K gold filled case is in good condition, with the broad “shoulders” at twelve retaining their sharp angular lines and the tapering sides flowing smoothly toward the narrower base at six. The profile shots reveal a slim, refined case that sits close to the wrist despite its visual presence. There is honest surface wear throughout, consistent with a watch that was worn and enjoyed as intended.

For the collector who appreciates Hamilton at its most creatively ambitious, the Khyber is an essential acquisition. It is a watch that represents the intersection of American manufacturing excellence and mid-century design daring, powered by a genuine Lancaster movement and housed in one of the most distinctive case shapes of its era. On the brown leather strap, it is a conversation starter of the highest order, and at the prices these still trade for relative to other Hamilton asymmetrics, it remains one of the best values in the vintage American watch market.
