Overview

You can tell a lot about a watch by whose name it was allowed to carry. The Tissot Antimagnetique wore its function openly: a movement built to keep time through the magnetic fields that were quietly filling the modern world, from telephone receivers to the dynamos of the machine age. Tissot had staked real ground here, among the first watchmakers to put antimagnetic protection into series production rather than leaving it a laboratory curiosity. The word on the dial was a promise, not decoration.

Then there is the second name. Below the Tissot signature, this dial reads Barth, Zurich. That line belonged to a retail jeweler, and in the mid-century Swiss trade a shop generally earned a co-signature by moving watches in real numbers, not by paying for the privilege. Barth was a Zurich house, the kind of establishment a customer trusted to stand behind what it sold. When Tissot let a retailer print a name beside its own, it was a handshake made permanent on the dial. Most of these watches long ago lost that second name to a service dial or a careless polish. This one kept it.

Time has done the rest. The dial began life an even eggshell and has warmed, unevenly and honestly, into a salmon that deepens toward the center, the kind of patina that cannot be ordered or faked. There is light speckling across the surface, a record of the decades rather than a flaw to apologize for.

The object is honest company for that dial. The round case measures 33.5mm across, a proportion that reads as correct on the wrist rather than shrunken, with faceted lugs that step down to the strap and a fluted crown. A chromed base-metal body is closed by a stainless steel back, the standard Antimagnetique construction, and it wears its origins plainly: the chrome has softened to brass at the lug tips and the high points, exactly where decades of shirt cuffs land. Inside runs the manual-wind Tissot caliber 27, turning under a domed acrylic crystal. Full painted Arabic numerals ring the dial, feuille hands sweep above them, and a small seconds register sits quietly at six.

We place it in the late 1940s, reading the dial script and the caliber together.
