Overview

Some watches were made for headlines. This one was made for a wrist, in 1944, while the Second World War was still running. Its Omega 30T2 SC movement is stamped with the serial 10,191,091, which places its making in the last full year of the war. It was never issued to any army. There is no broad arrow on the back, no service number, no unit engraving. It is something quieter and, to us, more honest: a beautifully made civilian watch wearing the military’s design language, because in 1944 that was simply what a legible, purposeful watch looked like.

A dial eight decades in the making

Time has been generous here. What left the factory as a silvered field dial has turned a deep, uneven tropical caramel, freckled with the silver-grey speckle of radium and lacquer aging on their own schedule. The full set of luminous Arabic numerals still reads crisp, the outer minute track still reads clearly, and a slim blued central seconds hand sweeps across the whole thing. This is patina, not damage. No two of these dials age the same way, and this one has gone somewhere genuinely beautiful.

The Omega 30T2 SC caliber

Open the caseback and the story widens. The 30T2 is one of the most decorated movement families Omega ever built. In chronometer trim it was a fixture at the observatory trials through the 1940s and laid the foundation for the Constellation line; in military dress it saw service on more than one nation’s wrists. This particular example is the working-class member of that famous family: 16 jewels, manual wind, central seconds, a copper-gilt going train, and a regulator index still marked A and R for fine adjustment. It is the same fundamental architecture that was winning precision’s highest honors, in the version a real person actually wore to work.

Reference 2179/4

The 2179/4 is a lesser-documented sibling in the 2179 family, and the inside of the caseback settles it plainly: the Omega Watch Co. hallmark, ACIER INOXYDABLE, and the reference 2179/4 stamped in full. The 35.5mm stainless steel case wears its long life honestly, with hairlines and softly rounded edges that a real vintage case earns rather than hides. We have set it on a forest-green Italian suede strap that picks up the warm tones of the dial without pretending the watch is anything other than what it is.

An honest 1944 Omega

Watches like this are getting quietly harder to find in unmessed-with condition. It has not been redialed, relumed, or polished into anonymity. What you get is a genuine 1944 Omega with a striking tropical dial and one of the great mid-century calibers beating inside, asking only to be wound and worn. If you have been waiting for a wartime Omega with real character and no fairy tales attached, this is the one.
