Overview

Eight stars, eight precision records. Omega’s Constellation name has an astronomical ring, but the story behind it is about watchmakers competing to keep better time. When the collection launched in 1952, its observatory medallion commemorated Omega’s results at Kew-Teddington and the Geneva Observatory. This Omega Constellation 168.004 carries that same little scene on its caseback.

The original Constellation range consisted of chronometer-certified watches, and this example continues that theme with Omega’s caliber 561. The 24-jewel automatic has a rotor that winds in both directions. Its movement bridge carries factory adjustment markings for five positions and temperature. The dial’s chronometer wording, the movement’s markings and the observatory outside tell different parts of the same story.

The stainless steel case measures 36mm across and 40mm from lug to lug. The silver dial has taken on a warm, finely speckled patina, especially around its perimeter, with applied baton markers and dauphine hands. The date window at three and smooth bezel keep the arrangement straightforward.

We particularly like the olive ostrich strap with this dial. The green and quill texture give the Constellation a less formal character, and the warm patina keeps the pairing from feeling too neat. It is a watch we would enjoy in regular rotation, with the observatory story there to rediscover whenever it comes off the wrist.
