Overview

Gruen gave style a number. In the company’s 1947 crystal catalog, it was part of a system that helped watchmakers match a watch with the right crystal. This Gruen Precision carries that system inside its case: 415 identifies the movement, while 932 is the style number. The longer stamp beneath them is a separate case serial. What reads like an obscure reference is actually a useful little piece of watchmaking history.

We find that practical bit of bookkeeping a pleasing contrast to the watch itself. Those four sweeping lugs have considerably more personality than their numerical description suggests. Broad and curved, they turn a small round watch into something closer to a piece of jewelry. It is the kind of detail we enjoy in vintage Gruen: the pleasure is in the individual design, not just the name on the dial.

The case measures 32mm across and 40mm from lug to lug, combining 10k rolled gold plate with a stainless steel back. Its off-white dial carries fine, scattered patina, with small seconds at six. Inside is the Swiss hand-wound caliber 415, marked for 17 jewels. The taupe Saffiano leather strap gives the gold-toned case a soft, understated pairing.

There is something appealing about a watch this decorative being so straightforward to live with. It needs winding by hand, but there is no calendar to catch up when it comes back out of the watch box. The fancy part is entirely in the case, and that is quite enough for us.
