Overview

Christmas 1961 is engraved into the back of this watch, in the recessed center of the caseback where gift inscriptions go. Someone chose an Omega 14773-1, paid to have the occasion cut into the steel, and handed it over. That is all we know about them, and it is more than a watch of this age usually gives up.

It was not a new watch that Christmas. The movement carries serial 16604044, which the Omega dating tables put in the late 1950s, so a couple of years sat between the making of this watch and the giving of it. Where it waited them out, a jeweler’s case or a drawer, nobody wrote down. The engraving is the only thing anyone left behind. And what got given carries no model name at all: the dial reads OMEGA, AUTOMATIC and SWISS MADE, and nothing else.

The reference is more interesting than that plain dial lets on. Omega’s archive files 14773 under the Seamaster line, and plenty of them left the factory exactly like this one, with no Seamaster script anywhere on the dial. We are not going to call it something it does not say it is. The better story sits under the rotor anyway: caliber 470, from the 470/471 family Omega introduced in 1955 as its first full-rotor automatic generation. Before that family the brand’s automatics were bumpers. The 470 sweeps the full circle, winds in both directions, beats at 19,800 per hour and holds around 46 hours. The 500 series everyone knows arrived afterward as the second wave built on this architecture. Whoever bought this in 1961 was buying a winding system six years old.

The Omega 14773-1 measures 33.5mm across and 41 lug to lug on 18mm lugs, dress proportions by any period reading. The dial is white, with applied baton markers, dauphine hands and no lume anywhere. Stamped clean into the perlage inside the caseback: 14773-1 SC. Age has been at all of it. Dark specks and staining have gathered around several markers and along the outer minute track, the hands and marker edges have tarnished down, and the crystal has taken scratches and a haze near its rim. The case carries the softened edges of use or past polishing, which we would rather say than not. The outer caseback is heavily marked, with six squared notches around the rim. None of it has been tidied up for sale.
