Overview

There is tropical, and there is tropical like this. To us, the cleanest way to grade a vintage dial is to ask whether another exactly like it could ever exist, and on that test, this Omega Seamaster 14701 is a one-of-one. Six decades of light, moisture, and lume-pad outgassing have walked the original cream lacquer into a fully mottled storm of mustard, caramel, and toasted-ivory, and the texture of it now reads less like a watch dial and more like aged parchment under glass.

Omega launched the Seamaster line in 1948, the year of the brand’s centennial, with a single thesis: take the rugged sealing principles Omega had refined while supplying timepieces to the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, and translate them into a civilian everyday watch. The 14701 sits squarely in the second wave of that thesis, produced roughly between 1960 and 1963, after the line had matured from a sealed-back daily-wear into a properly engineered Seamaster automatic with a calendar complication.

Inside is the caliber 562, Omega’s 24-jewel calendar automatic and quietly one of the sweetheart movements of the early 1960s. The 562 is the date-equipped sibling of the cal. 561 and the non-chronometer counterpart to the cal. 564 that powered the period Constellation. Bidirectional rotor winding, copper-plated bridges, quickset achieved via the under-known trick of rocking the hands back and forth across midnight, and a finishing standard that, in our opinion, was Omega writing love letters to its own watchmakers. Our movement carries serial 18184449, which lands production firmly in 1960, and the bridge is properly stamped with the 562 caliber designation right alongside it.

The case is the classic Seamaster 14701 architecture in stainless steel. It measures 34mm across, 42.5mm lug-to-lug, with an 18mm lug width, the sharp downturned faceted lugs the line is known for, and a screw-down caseback that still wears its factory geometry crisply. The inner caseback is stamped, in order, ACIER INOXYDABLE around the upper arc, the Omega Ω, OMEGA WATCH Co, FAB SUISSE, SWISS MADE, and the reference 14701 2 SC. The exterior caseback carries the embossed Seamaster hippocampus medallion at center, which on this example shows the soft surface texture and gentle handling marks consistent with sixty-plus years of life, never the aggressive flat-faced erasure of a polishing wheel. The Omega-signed crown seats correctly and pulls with the positive engagement a properly maintained caliber 562 should give. The acrylic crystal has fine surface marks under raking light and is entirely serviceable.

Above the tropicalized field sit faceted gold baton hour markers, single applied batons with a recessed center facet that catches light as two thin gold lines, the period-correct architecture for this reference. The applied Omega Ω and AUTOMATIC text sit at twelve, the cursive Seamaster script floats at six, and SWISS MADE is printed cleanly at the dial foot. The gold dauphine hour and minute hands have bronzed in sympathy with the dial, integrating into the warm tones below rather than standing apart from them, and the slender gold seconds hand reads cleanly against the mottled background. The date window at three carries a crisp white wheel with black numerals. The whole composition reads warmer and more sympathetic to wear than any factory-fresh cream Seamaster ever could.

We have paired it on one of our olive Italian suede straps with matching olive stitching, a deliberate choice that pulls the warm yellow-orange notes of the dial into a cooler, more bohemian register. The combination reads less Saturday-luncheon and more weekend-traveler. The strap rides on an OTTUHR-signed buckle and is sized to fit comfortably up to an 8.5 inch wrist.

Serviced in-house at OTTUHR and backed by our 2-year mechanical warranty. For the collector who chases dials over references, who understands that the kind of organic transformation living on the cream Seamaster lacquer here is, by definition, irreplaceable, this Omega Seamaster 14701 is exactly the kind of watch we love handling. In our opinion, this is what vintage was always supposed to look like.
